Världens undergång börjar med den tysta apokalypsen. The Long Dark är ett överlevnads- och utforskningsspel i första person utan zombies eller mördarrobotar. Istället är det du mot den hårda kanadensiska vintern som kämpar för att överleva ensam i en kall och fientlig miljö.

The Long Dark håller ett långsamt, meditativt tempo, men faran är mycket verklig. Varje dag måste du upprätthålla ditt förråd av mat och vatten, få tillräckligt med vila och hålla dig varm. Du måste utforska din omgivning för att leta, samla och jaga efter det du behöver. Genom allt detta måste du slåss mot vilda vargar, björnar och andra varelser som kan jaga dig. Spelet har ett berättelseläge där du växelvis spelar mellan piloten Will McKenzie och hans främmande fru, dr Astrid Greenwood. När en mystisk geomagnetisk storm störtar Wills plan måste de två utforska den karga vildmarken på Bear Island i Kanada och hitta varandra igen.

Alternativt försöker du i överlevnadsläget att leva så länge du kan i naturen och undvika att dö av hunger, törst, djurattacker, sjukdomar och den bittra, bittra kylan. Utforska 11 olika regioner, allt från en övergiven stad, ett jordbrukskommun, en vattenkraftsdamm, en lugn floddal eller en karg bergstopp. Hantera kritiska resurser som rent vatten och ved. Leta efter vapen som handeldvapen och gevär, eller skapa din egen båge och yxa från grunden. Skapa vinterutrustning av djurhudar eller snoka runt i obebodda hus efter kläder.

Resterna av civilisationen är öppna för dig om du kan trotsa det långa mörkret.
